When Main Water Lines Go Bad

Nothing lasts forever. On a long enough timeline, every plumbing pipe and fixture in your home will need to be replaced -- including your plumbing system’s primary artery, the main water line leading to your home.

Buried underground, this is the line that connects your household plumbing to the municipal water supply. You might not know its age, its length, its location or even the material from which the pipe is made, but this information may come in handy even if your water line has decades of service left in it.

What’s At Stake

From washing the dishes to flushing the toilet, it all depends on the main water line. When that line experiences a problem, it affects every plumbing fixture and appliance in your home. And should the line collapse or become damaged beyond repair, running water is off limits until replacement can be completed -- usually a process taking several days.

If you’re lucky, your home’s water line will last 70 years or more. But that depends on a lot of factors, and even if those factors are largely in your favor, damage can still occur. 

Considering how disruptive and costly it can be to replace a main water line, it’s best to have as much lead time as possible before replacement becomes necessary. The smart way to stay on top of this is to schedule a camera inspection of your main line about once every two years. As we’ll explain below, the greatest threats attack your main line very slowly, and the head-start offered by a camera inspection can put you in charge of the project timeline.

What Can Go Wrong

You might assume your main line is fairly well protected under all that dirt, but it faces threats from the outside and the inside. From the outside, the greatest threat is often tree roots. They creep toward the pipe over a matter of years, sometimes breaching it and causing leaks or collapse. And if anyone digs in your yard without knowing exactly where that line runs, it could be a shovel doing the damage.

From the inside, sediment buildup can effectively make the pipe smaller and smaller until the water pressure becomes untenable. And rust can form on virtually any metal pipe material after decades of water flow.

What to Do

Whether and when to replace your main water line is a decision best made with the input of a knowledgeable plumber. If your main line is made from iron -- or worse, lead -- a plumber will recommend replacement. Iron lines are prone to rust and and lead is highly toxic. Today’s new water lines are primarily copper or PVC.

If you have an active breach, time is of the essence. If your line is in fairly good shape overall, a repair may be preferable to replacement. But since either job can involve digging up the lawn, breaking up concrete and even cutting down trees, it’s often best to pursue total replacement if there’s a reasonable chance you’ll need to take that step within the next 10 to 20 years.

The best time to prepare for this job is when everything is working well. Choose a licensed, local plumber to help you locate every foot of your main line, assess its condition and verify the pipe material. With this homework done and biennial inspections, you’ll be ready for the worst when replacement time arrives.

Save the (Laundry) Day with Quick Washing Machine Fixes

Few homeowners relish the thought of schlepping loads of dirty clothes to the laundromat, and even fewer want to go back to the days of scrubbing out stains at the river’s edge. So when problems arise with your washing machine, ignoring them is not an option. 

Washing machines are becoming more sophisticated, and the new technology presents a few new opportunities for things to go wrong. But for the most part, washing machines are reliable and long-lasting appliances when properly maintained. Still, there are some trouble spots that are fairly common, several of which can be fixed by the average homeowner.

Wash Cycle Won’t Start

Out of all the things that can go wrong with your washing machine, it doesn’t get much worse than when the appliance is completely unresponsive. No matter how many knobs you turn or buttons you push, nothing happens. In this instance, there’s one thing you should do immediately: verify that the washing machine is plugged in.

It’s not a crazy thought -- washing machines can rattle and vibrate, causing electrical plugs to gradually slip loose from their outlets. And it’s often the case that the machine itself blocks the view of the plug, so it might not be obvious that the power is disconnected. 

The next place to check is your breaker box. If the washing machine’s circuit breaker was tripped, flip it back on, but keep an eye on your washer to make sure it doesn’t happen again. If it does, you may have an electrical issue -- consider calling an electrician.

Yet another potential cause is an interruption in the water supply, caused by something like a clogged water line, a closed water valve leading to your washer or a complete water shutoff to your home. The problem could even be a malfunction of the lid switch, which lets the washer know that the lid is closed. 

If your investigation doesn’t turn up any leads, or if your machine is still covered under warranty, the next step is to reach out to a repair professional.

Drum Won’t Spin

If your washer appears to be operational but the drum is stuck at a standstill, the problem may be with the belt that turns the drum. The belt can slip out of its grooves or even break after years of use.

To check this, refer to the documentation for your exact model to learn how to gain access to the outside of the drum. This is often a simple matter of removing a panel that requires no more than a screwdriver. Once you can verify whether the belt is loose or broken, you can decide whether to call in a pro or to replace the belt yourself.

Water Won’t Drain

When water won’t drain from the drum at the end of a cycle, it often means that there’s an obstruction somewhere in the drain line. Anything you accidentally leave in a pocket and send through the wash is a potential clog -- even something as small as a coin.

If you want to check your drain line, begin by completely disconnecting the washing machine from its power source. Be prepared with towels and a bucket, as there may be standing water in the line. Disconnect the line both from the machine and any wastewater outlet to which it might be connected. Try looking through the hose to spot any clogs, and dislodge any you find by blowing air through the hose with a compressor or flushing it out with a high-pressure hose.

Not every washing machine problem calls for a DIY fix, so establish a relationship with an appliance repair professional you can trust. And if the problem can be traced back to your household plumbing, be sure to turn to your experienced local plumbers.

Trick the Eye
Various visual effects give the illusion of more space in your bathroom than actually exists. A well-placed mirror reflects light and adds depth to a room. Hang one large mirror in the bathroom, positioning it so it’s one of the first things you see when you walk in the door. Or add a decorative eye-catching focal point such as a painting, sculpture or plant. Having something attractive for the eye to fall on takes the focus off of the fact that the space is small.
Painting in light, neutral tones also helps open up the room, as does using multiple shades of the same light paint color. Opt for paint colors like beige, cream, taupe and off-white, as well as muted blue, gray, yellow, pink and blue. Bee Helpful By Planting a Bee-Friendly Garden

You may already know that bee populations are in decline around the world. But what you might not know is that you can play a role in safeguarding at-risk bee species from possible extinction, all while making your lawn a more colorful place. 

Given their reputation for stinging, bees might not seem like the kind of guests you want to attract to your home. But an unprovoked bee poses little threat to most of us, and the benefits that bees bring far outweigh any risks.

Bees are prolific pollinators, and insect pollination is essential to the growth of plants and crops that we can sometimes take for granted. If the bee crisis worsens, it could have devastating effects on pollination-dependent crops we all love, like apples, peaches, watermelon and even coffee.

As a result of agricultural development, pesticide use, climate change and urbanization, more than half of North America’s native bee populations are in decline, according to a recent report from the Center for Biological Diversity. Nearly one quarter are at risk of extinction. Give your native bees a break by creating a little backyard oasis where they can eat, drink and rest.

Get Your Garden in Gear

To create the ideal bee garden, observe the following best practices:

Go big and go bright. Bees are attracted to bold, colorful flowers, especially those with purple, yellow and blue blooms. But if those colors are jumbled up like a kaleidoscope, they can be disorienting to your winged friends. Try to plant blooms of a single color in a solid block of about a square yard, which is optimal for a bee’s visual acuity.

Stick with native flowers where possible. You’re most likely to attract native bee species to your home, and the flowers they’re familiar with stand the best chance of enticing them to pollinate. Use the online guide at PlantNative to find flower options that are native to your area; just be sure to choose a combination of flowers that offer lots of pollen and nectar. Bees need pollen to feed their young, as well as nectar to keep themselves going as they hunt for more flowers.

Avoid all pesticides. The use of these chemicals is a major driver of population decline among bees, so go the natural route with your garden. Pesticides will kill off all insects, not just those that present a nuisance. 

Provide a water source. Bees need access to fresh water and a place to land while drinking. A good solution is to erect a birdbath or place a large, shallow dish in your garden area, then fill the dish with a few large pebbles. As long as the pebbles reach above the surface of the water, it will be easy for the bees to get a drink. Be sure to replace the water daily!

Make shelter easy to find. Many bee species prefer to burrow into the ground, so be sure to leave some grassy areas open for those bees to make themselves at home. You can also purchase or build a bee hotel, which provides an easy place for bees to take shelter from wind and rain.

By creating a little bee paradise in your backyard, you can help fight back against the forces that are threatening bee populations -- and by extension, threatening all those crops that depend on natural pollination. 3 Tips on Choosing Kitchen Curtains

The kitchen may not be the most important room in the house, but you do spend a lot of time in it. And, we know the best food is made with love, so it’s a given that you should feel comfortable in your kitchen. When it comes to your kitchen’s curtains, here are some tips that might help you choose the best curtains that perfectly fit your kitchen style.

Curtain Fabric
There are many kinds of fabric available for kitchen curtains from those made of heavy materials, to those made of lightweight fibers. Brocades and other heavier fabrics are usually not recommended as they obstruct air and light. The most recommended fabric for kitchen curtains is cotton because it is a durable but lightweight fabric that is easy to wash, and is thus ideal to the demands of kitchen action.
There are fabrics that have cute printed or embroidered designs that could definitely add to the aesthetic value of the curtains. It is however important to check if the fabric is light resistant so that it would not easily fade or turn yellow over time. Some kitchen curtains are quite thin and might need to have linings. Most fabrics are sold pre-shrunk so that their shapes would not be altered, however, if you are making your own curtain, you might need to make some allowance for shrinkage. Source: StreetDirectory

Curtain Color
If your kitchen already has a theme and/or color, you should take care to seamlessly integrate the curtains. Match them to the tiles (including wall tiles), counters, furniture, etc.
If you have tiles of neutral colors, you should keep this neutrality with your curtains. Focus your choice towards beige, white or pastel colors.
