How to Find the Source of a Garbage Disposal Leak

Even if you take great care of your garbage disposal, leaks can develop over time. You could find yourself reaching into the under-sink cabinet for dishwashing detergent only to discover an expanding pool of water! To complicate matters, it may not be immediately clear where the leak is coming from.

If you want to investigate the situation before calling a plumber, it’s important to know where and how to check for the source of the leak, as well as what your repair options are.

The Anatomy of a Garbage Disposal

With most garbage disposals, there are four areas where leaks can occur:

  1. The sink flange, which connects the top of the disposal to the bottom of the sink drain.
  2. The dishwasher connection, which is usually a rubber hose connected to the side of the disposal.
  3. The drain pipe, which is usually a plastic or metal pipe that drains water and food away to the sewer.
  4. The garbage disposal itself.

Identify the Source

If you want to conduct a test to find the source of the leak, begin by drying the outside of the disposal and sink flange so that any new moisture will stand out. Then place a stopper in the sink drain and fill the sink with several inches of water.

Wait for a few minutes while you observe the disposal under your sink. If you notice active dripping, that’s a sign that the leak is coming from the sink flange.

If it’s still dry, remove the drain plug from the sink and watch the disposal closely. You should be able to see water coming from one of the other three points -- either the dishwasher hose, the drain pipe or some other part of the disposal. The appropriate fix depends on where the dripping originates.

Whether to DIY

Depending on how comfortable you are performing your own plumbing repairs, you might be able to fix one or all of these problems yourself. But it can be easy to get in over your head with this job, so if you have any doubt, consider calling a licensed plumber after tracking down the source of the leak.

Fixing a leaky sink flange may be very easy. It could be a simple matter of tightening the bolts that hold the flange onto the sink drain. But if that doesn’t work, you may need to apply a new layer of plumbers putty to seal the flange into place. To do this, you’ll need to loosen the mounting bolts and create enough space between the flange and drain to smear a fresh dab of putty all the way around the drain. Then just re-tighten the bolts and wait a few hours for the putty to form a tight seal.

If the leak is coming from the dishwasher hose, you’ll need to determine whether the hose is cracked or simply loose. A cracked hose will need to be replaced altogether, but a loose hose can usually be fixed by just tightening the hose clamp.

Similarly, a drain line leak may possibly be fixed by using a wrench to tighten the connection. But there’s also a seal inside this connection, and that may have failed due to age. If so, the seal must be replaced.

The worst-case scenario is if the leak is coming from a crack or seal in the disposal itself. Some of these leaks are repairable by a professional, but in most cases, it’s most cost effective to simply replace the entire disposal.

Call the Pros

Not sure if you’re up to the task of identifying your leak or repairing it afterward? Just reach out to your local plumbing experts for reliable expert service.

3 Ways Window Treatments Can Make Your Living Room Better

Having a high-end looking home can be difficult, especially if you have a tight decorating budget. Fortunately, there are ways window treatments can help make your living room better.  Read on!

Floor-to-Ceiling Sophistication

Floor-to-ceiling drapes are in high demand right now. Long drapes are more prevalent as homes are being built with higher ceilings and loft spaces become more popular. These drapes offer a sophisticated look, and at many places, can be customized in bright, contemporary hues for an updated appearance. According to Janet Barragan, senior vice president of window design at Curtainworks, “Eighty-four-inch curtains are the U.S. standard, but we now offer 95-inch curtains, and get requests for even longer curtains, from 108 to 120 inches, to accommodate today’s homes.” If you’re searching for long curtains for your windows, don’t be afraid to go custom and get the perfect window treatments that truly fit the unique size of your space. Establish a Color Palette
The fabric you choose for window treatments helps establish a color palette for the entire room. In this case, the window panels are a solid aqua, but a patterned fabric could be just as influential. The watery shade coordinates with the celadon rug and concrete gray walls, providing a colorful backdrop that’s also soft enough to let bright accents in fuchsia, purple, and pumpkin stand out. Source: BHG

Swing Arm Curtains
Swing arm curtains are one of the more unique window treatment ideas, and they haven’t seen much use in the United States in recent years. They require a special hinged curtain rod that allows you to move the curtain to stand out at a 90-degree angle from the window. Swing arm curtains are a brilliant and surprisingly inexpensive solution for bedrooms where you want to be able to block light easily without having to worry about ruining a carefully pleated or artfully scrunched curtain fabric with daily adjustments. Wicked Winter

Between the dry heat in your home, and frigid air outside, your hair has become a victim of the wicked winter weather. However, don’t panic! We’re here to give you some advice to help your hair stay nourished and healthy for the rest of the season.

First thing is first, fashion (obviously). Whether it be a super cute skull cap from The North Face, to a crocheted beanie by Canada Goose, hats are a MUST. You’re going to need to protect your luscious locks from all of the harsh wind, rain, and snow. I know what you’re thinking… “But… what about hat hair?!” A silk scarf will fix that along with helping maintain static cling! All you have to do is wrap your hair in a silk scarf, then put your hat on over it!

A silk scarf isn’t the only thing that is going to manage all of your static cling. Using a heat protectant such as Crème Magistral, by Kerastase, before, or after styling your hair will help prevent any static. Not only will it help protect against the heat, but it will also keep your hair nourished and soft!

Don’t feel like washing your hair every day? In this season, you shouldn’t! Especially going outside with wet hair… 1. You could very well catch a cold. 2. Your hair will become brittle and dry from the cold air. Fresh Dust, a dry shampoo by L’Oreal, is going to help your hair have a fresh look without the fresh wash!

Be sure to stay regular with your trims, as well as glosses, which are usually about every 6-8 weeks. This way you’ll be able to keep up with those dry, split ends. When scheduling your next appointment, ask about our Fusio Dose conditioning treatments (which are customizable to accommodate your hair needs), along with adding bond building treatments, such as Olaplex or Smartbond to your color services! These treatments will only add a few extra minutes to your appointment. Plus, your hair is going to need as much moisture to lock in as possible.

Get ahold of this winter weather and let us help you, help your hair!

Top 4 reasons you need saunas for your home

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

Saunas are extremely popular today, and you can find one to visit virtually anywhere. However, the same concerns that crop up with a pool tend to pop up with saunas as well. Is it clean enough? Will there be too many people there? That is why saunas for the home have suddenly become extremely popular as well. With that being said, keep on reading to find out four of the top reasons you need a sauna in your home today.

You Get to Wear Whatever You Feel Like

If you go to a gym, a spa, or any other public place, then they are going to have rules about what you areHow best to use a sauna allowed to wear. If you have one of the saunas for the home, then you don’t have to worry about what you wear. You can wear shorts, a bikini, or nothing at all if the feeling strikes you and no one can say a word about it.

You Know that The Sauna is Clean

In today’s world, germs aren’t just something that can make you sick, in many cases, they can give you something that will kill you. If you have your own sauna in your home, then you don’t have to worry about how clean, or how dirty, the sauna is. You can also control who comes in and out of your sauna, so that you know if they may be sick when they come.

Private Saunas Are Easier to Get too

How many times have you passed on going to the sauna because the weather was bad or you were just too tired? Having your own private sauna means that you don’t have to go out in the snow or rain to get there and that you can just walk a couple of feet when you’re tired and then not have to drive that whole long way back home.

You Can Control the Noise

In a public sauna, you can’t control who comes in and out or how much they talk. If you want to be alone with your own home sauna, then you can just tell everyone to get out. It’s just that simple!

These are just a few of the reasons that you might want to consider getting a sauna installed in your home. For more information on just how to get that done, contact the professionals at Perfectbath today.

What is a Hot Water Circulation Pump?

Eliminate the Wait for Hot Water When You Need It Most

One of the worst feelings in the morning is when you step into the shower to get ready for work – only to be sprayed with ice-cold water. If you’re lucky, you catch yourself in time to not scream as you progress from bleary sleep to fully awake in half a second. If you’re unlucky, your shriek wakes up your next door neighbors.

Thankfully, you can avoid this situation and bask in warm water without delay by installing a device called a hot water circulation pump.

How does a hot water circulation pump work?

It’s pretty simple. The pump keeps a small amount of hot water flowing through the pipes in your house so the water never gets cold. By having some hot water circulating in your pipes at all times, the warm-up time for your water is dramatically shortened.

What are the benefits of a hot water circulation pump?

The easy answer: you reduce water waste because you don’t have to run the shower for five minutes in the morning just to bring the water temperature to a decent level.

In a more advanced pump system, the pump sits at the water heater, while a control valve is installed at a fixture that experiences heavy use but sits far away from the home’s hot water heater. Such a valve can be programmed to work only to reach a certain temperature and during a specific time frame, since most homes don’t need on-demand hot water 24/7. This sort of system helps you save energy and money because you’re not heating up water in your pipes at times when people don’t need it.

And in a demand-based hot water circulation pump, the system pushes any cold water sitting in the warm water pipes into the cold water pipes, and quickly pushes out water directly from the hot water heater to the shower or faucet you want to use. All you do is give the system a bit of warning via remote control or motion detector in your bathroom.

There are even ENERGY STAR rated models available to maximize the energy efficiency of how you heat the water.

How can I have one installed in my home?

3 Reasons to Choose Roman Blinds

Choosing which type of window treatments you’d like for your home can be a bit daunting because of the number of options available. However, there is something special about roman blinds which makes them so popular. Below are 3 reasons why roman blinds may be your best bet:

The Goods on Style
Roman blinds come in an array of materials and styles, making them a good window treatment for many spaces. For the industrial or minimalist home, you might choose sleek, solid-colored linen blinds, or opt for satin weave with a subtle stripe or check pattern. For a traditional, country or shabby chic abode, consider blinds in rich tweed or woven jacquard with high cotton content for warmth; embossed faux silk filters light and offers a subtler look. Lined, light-blocking versions allow you to darken bedrooms or enjoy living room privacy from passersby. In damp areas, such as the kitchen, laundry room or bathroom, Roman blinds made from easy-to-wipe-clean synthetic material that’s less vulnerable to mold are a smart choice. Privacy
Roman shades offer a large amount of privacy and light blockage. The full fabric panels filter sunlight as it enters the room and prevent outside passersby from seeing into the home. For even more light blockage, most special order Roman blind manufacturers offer a blackout shade, constructed with a special lining that blocks out all light from rooms that need a complete room-darkening feature. The room darkening option also keeps shadows from being cast to the exterior at night when lights are on in the room. Source: eHow

Timelessness
One of the biggest advantages to using Roman shades on your windows is their timeless style.  Romans have been around for decades (in their present form) and tend not to cycle in and out of popularity with the latest trend.  A wise fabric selection will extend the life of your shade by keeping it from becoming too trendy.
