The Differences Between Balayage and Babylights

Balayage and babylights are two of the most popular highlighting trends right now. Both of these stunning trends allow longer time between visits because regrowth is not as noticeable as with the traditional coloring techniques. We all love to save time, right!? Balayage and babylights are similar because they both highlight and offer a more youthful look, but there are certainly some differences.

Balayage

Balayage Blonde Highlighting Philadelphia Hair SalonBalayage is a French coloring technique that was developed in the 1970s and the French word means “to sweep or paint”. This technique is super trendy now with celebrities like Jessica Alba and Rihanna.

These highlights are carefully handpainted on your strands for the perfect amount of highlighting to bring dimension and brightness to your hair’s appearance. This technique leaves your hair darker at the top and then progressively lightens as it moves towards your ends  — just like having your hair sun-kissed by the beach sun all summer long. Unlike traditional highlighting, balayage is typically done without being wrapped in foil for processing. Instead, it is usually processed in open air or saran wrap.

Balayage treatments take about 3 to 4 hours due to the careful hand-painting of each section of your hair. Plus, keep in mind if your hair is longer, the time will be on the longer side. But, you will be in awesome company during this time, can sip on some water or wine, and can take more time before you book your next treatment that standard color and highlighting.

The fun part about Balayage is that your highlights improve with each visit. They start out more subtle on your first visit, then with each future treatment more dimension is beautifully crafted.

Babylights

Babylights are a newer trend that reminds many of the natural superfine Babylights Highlights Philadelphia Hair Color Salonhighlights of very young children. Victoria’s Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whitely and model Dominika Grnova look stunning with babylights.

To create subtle dimensional babylights, the amount of hair highlighted in each section of your hair is slight with minimal separation between each section to blend naturally with your base color. The highlighted strands are wrapped in foil for processing. The highlights are superfine around the hairline with a soft graduation of color that is lighter at the ends of your strands.

While balayage and babylights both highlight your hair, have a youthful look, and can give you more time between salon visits, they differ in application, time of treatment, overall coverage, and subtleness. If you are new to highlighting and want the most subtle option, babylights is the way to go. If you want to move away from highlighting your entire head and want a more natural sun-kissed look, balayage is an excellent choice.

Balayage and babylights are often done as separate treatments, but the wonderful thing about hair, if that you can combine these treatments to create the look you desire most. You can also add other treatments like root shadowing which is very popular with babylights.

Both highlighting techniques can be used on all colors and lengths of hair. But, it is best to have a consultation so we can customize the best techniques for your hair goals.
