Dinner in Madrid: Paella at La Barraca Restaurant

A Walk-In Bathtub Could Make Bathtime Safer and Easier

Even if you’re steady on your feet, slipping in the tub or shower is a dangerous possibility. And if you struggle with mobility or balance, the combination of water, slick porcelain and stepping over the threshold may just pose too high of a risk.

Accessories like non-slip shower mats and grab bars can improve the situation, but for some, a walk-in bathtub may be the ideal solution. These are fairly common in medical and elder care facilities, but they can also be installed in most bathrooms to make bathing safe and easy in spite of injuries, disabilities and advanced age.

Just Right For You

As the name implies, walk-in bathtubs allow you to walk straight into the tub without stepping over the edge one leg at a time. This is accommodated by a watertight door that opens inward into the tub. A seat built into the tub allows the user to sit comfortably while they bathe and relax.

Because they’re larger and more complex than your standard tub, walk-in tubs can be pricey. They tend to start around $2,000, but the more luxurious models can top $10,000.

Some of the common features that separate low-end and high-end models include bubbling jets, shower wands, sophisticated temperature controls and high-speed drains.

Find Your Perfect Fit

The high price isn’t the only reason why walk-in tubs are high-involvement purchases. Because they’re designed to serve those who need assistance in the bathroom, it’s important to choose a tub that meets the specific needs of the person who will use it.

Some models have very narrow entrances, which can be difficult for some users to navigate. Others have a small ridge at the bottom that must be stepped over -- this is much easier than stepping into an ordinary tub, but it may still be a challenge for those who lack a full range of motion. You should never make a purchase decision without giving the user an opportunity to try out a display model first.

Body type can also be a major factor in making this decision. Since walk-in tubs are designed to be used while sitting, users who are very tall may find that they can’t become submerged enough to create a truly enjoyable bathing experience.

Patience Required

Because you have to enter and exit a walk-in tub through a door in the side, the tub has to be empty whenever you go in and out. That means you have to fill the tub while you’re sitting inside, and you also have to wait for the water to drain completely before you can get out.

Filling the tub can be an uncomfortable prospect if your chosen model lacks its own temperature controls or if your hot water heater leaves something to be desired. It’s important to know both how you’ll get the water temperature just right and how long it will take to fill the tub.

It’s also important to know how long it will take for the tub to drain. Walk-in tubs tend to be much higher capacity than regular bathtubs, so drain time could be substantially longer. Most walk-in tubs are designed with wide-mouth drains to speed this process up, but narrow drain pipes in your home could place a limit on how quickly you can start drying off.

With all these factors in mind, it’s important to start working with a knowledgeable plumbing professional from the very outset if you’re considering a walk-in bathtub. The right plumber can help you save time, maximize your budget and get the job done right the first time!

4 Types of Exterior Window Shutters

Shutters are window treatments that are attractive and functional. Most people prefer having them indoors but for people who seek extra privacy and shelter from storms, shutters can adorn exterior windows as well. Below is a list of the different types of shutters meant for exterior use.

Louvered
Louvered shutters have angled slats that allow air and light to pass through. These have a more defined look than the more low-key panel shutters, and work best on homes that are ornate, classical or casual in appearance:

  • Victorian
    ·         Italianate
    ·         Federal and Colonial (operable louvers are common on second floors of these style homes)
    ·         Georgian
    ·         Cape Cod
    ·         Ranch
    ·         Greek Revival Source: DIYNetwork

Board-and-Batten
These slab-like window coverings hail from the American Old West. They are highly durable in temperate and tropical climates alike. They are side-mounted, and meet in the center of the window. Source: EstatemillWork

Combination
A combination shutter is simply a mix of two or more shutter styles—in this case, the shutters are a louvered, raised-panel, cut-out combo. This style is a great choice for homeowners who want a customized, one-of-a-kind look that reflects their style and personality. Source: BobVila

Raised and Solid Panel
Panel shutters utilize panels in its design, similar to the decorative panels seen on a front door or kitchen cabinet door. Some of the fancier styles may even contain cut-out shapes or designs for added visual appeal. Panel shutters are great for luxury and contemporary homes. Source: SpokaneExteriors

4 Tips for Repairing a Leaky Shower Faucet

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

A leaky shower faucet could potentially be costing you money on your water bill. Thus, to help you out, we’ll discuss 3 tips for repairing a leaky shower faucet below. Read on!

Remove the Handle
Start by removing the faucet handle. Methods for doing this will depend upon the faucet’s design. Older or simply-designed faucets often have an exposed screw front and center or a locking screw in the side. Newer and more decorative models of faucets hide the screw beneath a cover cap. With these, you need to pry off the cover cap to expose the screw. If your faucet handle is the type with a cover cap and there is no obvious method of removal, use a very thin screwdriver or pocketknife to pry the cap off. Be careful not to scratch the finish or damage the material. Source: HomeTips

Remove the Cartridge

  • The cartridge is a large ring that is adjacent to the wall. It will be exposed after you remove the faucet handle.
  • Use a cartridge puller. This can be found at a hardware or home improvement store. Source: wikiHow

Install the New Cartridge
Turn the hex screw by hand until it bottoms out. Snug up the hex nut by hand and tug on the cartridge puller handle. If the cartridge won’t pull out, hold the puller handle steady and tighten the hex nut two full turns. Pull the cartridge out of the faucet body. Buy an identical replacement cartridge, align it properly and reassemble the parts. Source: FamilyHandyman

Clean and Reassemble
Before putting the shower stem back, take the opportunity to clean any junk from the pipes. Put the shower stem back into the pipe in reverse order from how you took it out. Use some faucet grease and apply it to the faucet stem threads. In order to prevent damage, re-caulk the faucet plate. When completely finished, don’t forget to turn your water back on. Dwell at HQ by Porte

After blazing through sales of the first two phases at HQ, Porte is on to selling it’s latest phase, Dwell, just to the east of Surrey Centre. This location has a lot to recommend it. The development will share the block with not one but two elementary schools. Hawthorne Park is just across the street. You’re just far enough from King George Boulevard to feel removed from all the bustle without losing the convenience of proximity to stores and shopping.

One of the proposed branches of the LRT line should pass just by HQ along 104 Avenue. This should be an obvious boon for the surrounding areas.

Celebrate Earth Day with Eco-Friendly Changes

Earth Day is this Saturday, and people across North America will gather at festivals to learn more about their ecosystem and celebrate everything that’s great about the natural world. But while there’s so much nature to enjoy, there’s also much work to be done to protect and heal our environment. And you can do your part by starting a few new habits this weekend.

Benjamin Franklin Plumbing encourages everyone to conserve water, a precious resource, but there’s no reason to stop there when committing to a greener lifestyle. Here are just a few ways you can help the planet on Earth Day and all year long!

Drink more tap water. Bottled water may be convenient, but that convenience comes at a terrible price. Tens of millions of plastic water bottles are disposed of every day in the U.S., but only a fraction of those end up in recycling bins. Those bottles take loads of oil and energy to produce, and much more to transport across the country. Use household water filters and durable water bottles to enjoy fresh water on the go without adding to unnecessary energy use and landfill waste.

Wash your clothes in cold water. Today’s washing machines are capable of getting out tough stains without the need for hot water, allowing you to save energy on water heater use. To make cold water washing even more effective, look for detergent formulas designed specifically for cold water.

Air dry your clothes when you can. Like most appliances that produce heat, clothes dryers are among the biggest consumers of household energy. Clothes will dry quickly and smell fresh when hung to dry on the clothesline on a sunny day, but you can also hang-dry them indoors on a drying rack for all-weather convenience. Plus, it’s easier on your clothes -- all that lint you pull out of the dryer trap? Those are bits of your clothes you aren’t getting back!

Try a lower water heater temperature. Turn the dial back a notch for the day and see if you notice a difference. If you can live with the lower temperature, keep it there to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. And if you live in a sunny area, look into solar water heaters before it comes time to replace your current unit.

Grow your own herbs, fruits and vegetables. Spring isn’t over yet -- there’s still time to plant a garden, however small, so you can fill your table with your own home-grown food. Home gardens have a positive environmental impact and can help you appreciate what it takes to get fresh food to your local grocer. And if you grow too much, freeze or can what you can’t eat in time to ensure zero waste.

However you choose to celebrate Earth Day, be sure to include at least one good habit that will make you feel great, keep money in your pocket and serve the planet well. Reach out to your local plumbing professionals for even more ideas, like the installation of low-flow toilets, greywater recycling systems and water-saving faucets and showerheads.

3 Curtain Ideas for your Bedroom

Looking for window treatment ideas for your bedroom? Find scores of inspiring looks in this collection of beautiful curtain ideas, including: layered pair, coastal theme and trim with fabric.

Below are 3 curtain ideas for your bedroom:

Layered Pair
Although one is nice, a lot can be said for two window treatments working together in a bedroom, where function and style go hand in hand. For function, install a hardworking foundation, such as these plantation shutters. They control light and noise from outside and are an insulating barrier for cold glass. Yet they are hard, angular, and bland. The curtain panels provide softness, color, and pattern. Mounted above the windows, they don’t interfere with the function of the shutters. They also help dampen noise inside the room, acting as sound absorbers to create a hushed and comforting environment. Source: BHG

Coastal Theme
Coastal themes are perfect for bedrooms as the neutral colour palette feels so calm and restful. Contemporary coastal themes play with traditional materials and textures to keep the look fresh. Aged driftwood boards are no longer confined to floors and boathouses, but have been elevated and repurposed into stylish textured wallcoverings. In this New England style bedroom we’ve created a coherent theme using formal and informal stripes on the walls and headboard, curtains and blind, using Riviera Mist curtains and Hatti Mineral Roman blind.  Source: Hillarys.co.uk

Trim With Fabric
Add a fun element to the bedroom decor with a simple, rectangular valance accentuated with beaded fringe, says Washington state designer Natalia Smith. It’s a clean, unobstructed look that opens the room to light and color and adds the finishing touch — as long as the fabric in the valance matches what’s on the pillows and bedding. Smith prefers a cornice with simple padding and a finished edge at the bottom for transitional, as opposed to traditional, style. Source: HGTV

3 Considerations for a Bathroom Remodel

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

Bathroom remodels are a popular way to upgrade old fixtures into a space you’ll find more enjoyable. Whether you are doing the entire job yourself or hiring a professional, here are some things you should consider when making bathroom renovations.

Below are 3 considerations for a bathroom remodel:

Replacing Old Installations
The decision you make about the floor depends on what you have and how you feel about it. “If you like your floor and it appears to be in good condition I would keep it,” says Mark, but he has a qualifier: “I would always get carpet out of the bathroom.”
If a floor’s in less-than-idea shape, you may still be able to save it. “You can very often successfully repair and refinish a hardwood floor,” says Mark. “If a tile floor is only in need of regrouting it’s a keeper.”
But if the tiles need replacing and you don’t have a box of extras sitting around, you will probably want to replace the floor. “Otherwise, you will spend a lot of frustrating time looking for matching tiles,” says Mark. “Read your fortune cookie, ‘You won’t find it. Be happy, give up’ or, ‘You will go crazy by end of week.'”
When you decide to rip up and re-do, watch your timing, he adds. “Sometimes homeowners get ahead of themselves and replace the vinyl flooring in their bathroom a few months before starting a major remodel.” That takes away any options on the floor plan, says Mark. “And you also put your new floor at risk of being damaged during the remodel.”  Source: DIYNetwork

Relocating Your Plumbing
Hiding the plumbing — or not. Think carefully about fixtures and all the stuff that’s connected to them as you lay out the plumbing, electrical and framing, not the other way around. This will help you avoid mistakes and do tighter work.
You may choose to leave plumbing supply lines exposed, as in the bathroom here, for a more industrial or vintage look. Or you may choose to hide them behind the sink pedestal for a more modern look. Little things make big impressions. Source: Houzz

Removing Bathroom Fixtures
First, decide what stays and what goes, and to protect your budget, it’s smart to reuse as much as possible. So you may want to replace your tub or sink, but since commodes never go out of style, it’s a good idea to keep your toilet around. However, moving bathroom fixtures isn’t an easy feat. Like any demo, it gets real messy real quick. For instance, if you’ve seen a house under construction, you’ll notice tubs are installed immediately after the walls are framed but before they’re drywalled. In fact, since doors are also added afterwards, you may have to remove jambs to get shower stalls out. And though demo is a necessary evil, it actually requires a lot of care if you’re restoring certain items. So you may want to hire a professional for this step. Plus, if you’re thinking about several remodels, do them at the same time from a cost savings perspective and for efficiency’s sake (nobody wants to live in this mess more than once, especially without a shower).
